L'Entraide vincentienne à l'étranger,
sister of SSVP Belgium
Bearing in mind the immense poverty experienced by some populations in the South, ëYou shall treat the alien who resides with you no differently than the natives born among youí (LV 19:34) has virtually become an eleventh commandment for Society of St Vincent de Paul. Our means are meagre of course compared with the aid that should be given to all the deprived people on the other side of the world. But every act of solidarity can change the course of a life or a community. SSVP conducts these activities through its sister organisation Entraide Vincentienne à l'Etranger (Vincentian Assistance abroad).
So why has SVVP delegated these activities to a sister organisation? Well, to obtain permission to issue statements of donations for income tax purposes, the minister of finance requires that foreign aid is channelled to developing countries. These countries must be registered separately, in a distinct not-for-profit organisation.
Entraide Vincentienne à l'Etranger provides regular aid to countries we have historical relations with as well as countries for which we have a special Belgian Vincentian unit. Aid may on occasions be given to certain countries based on special circumstances.
